LECTURE 5 – 8/20/09 Thursday - o What is LOVE? Attraction, romance, passion, intimacy, commitment - Loving with all your… brain o Photo of their beloved Caudate: cravings Ventral tegmental area: pleasure and motivation o Erotic photos Hypothalamus: drives/motivation Amygdala: arousal, among other things - Equal Arousal: Sex Differences in Processing of Sexually Arousing Stimuli? o How do you find the perfect stimuli that shows equal arousal between men and women? Able to do this and found with equal arousal, found sex differences, stronger lighting of  hypothalamus than amygdale.  More sexual attrction and lust reaction to the brain males vs.  females Excluded individuals who had any same sex desire or experience because they wanted to take  the orientation aspect out.  36% females excluded, 15% males exclude - The brain during arousal, stimulation, and orgasm o Females Visual stimulation: visual, attention, motor, somatosensory, emotion, reward areas Clitoral stimulation: somatosensory cortex increase Orgasm: orbitofrontal cortex and limbic area decrease, cerebellar and VTA increase o Males Visual stimulation: visual, attention, motor, somatosensory, emotion, reward areas, amygdale,  hypothalamus increases Penile stimulation: somatosensory cortex increase, amygdala decrease Orgasm: limbic area decreases, cerebellar, VTA increase o These areas are heavily involved in fear o If women are not able to be fearless during sex (not totally trust situation, relaxed) cannot enjoy orgasm  at much - Fake orgasms o 80% of couples reached orgasm with socks o 50% of couples reached orgasm without socks o Females   can imitate orgasm very well.  Extreme deactivation of large portions of the brain involved  with brain in orgasm.  If you fake it intentionally the motor cortex is activated - Triangle Theory of LOVE (Sternberg, 1986) o Intimacy: you know the person, trust the person o Commitment: having a sense of a future together
