LECTURE 4 – TUES – 8/13/09 - KDRAMAS -  o PARTNER o STYLE o DREAM - Cultural Influence o Pressure to conform to what constitutes gender for a particular group o Social coherence by conforming - Social Influence o Consensus theory: social practices and customs evolve because they benefit the cohesion and smooth  working of social groups o Conflict theory: gender roles arise out of conflicts of interest - Psychological Influence o Freud’s identification theory Sexual attraction to opposite-sex parent Anxiety and subsequent identification with same-sex parent o Social learning theory Identification of model Observing/imitating model o Gender schema theory Sex typing as a means of processing and organizing information Development Stereotypes - Gender Schema theory: Development o Gender Identity Person’s inner sense of being a boy or a girl o Gender stability People retain their genders for a lifetime o Gender constancy Even if appearances or behaviors change, gender remains constant - Gender stereotyping o Beliefs and attitudes about masculinity and femininity o Association of patterns of behavior with either females or males, overlooking individual variations o Where did this come from?? - “How to be a real man” o No girlie stuff o Be a winner o Be a tough guy o Give ‘em hell - Alternative male gender roles? o Metrosexual Spend money for their lifestyle Care strongly about aesthetic appearances o Ubersexual Displays toughness but is metrosexual o Heteropolitan Ordinary men who know how to dress but can still be men
