In 2005, I joined a group called Improv Everywhere. This group is known for gathering many people such as myself, who like to have fun and organized fun at that. As the Improv Everywhere states: “Improv Everywhere causes scenes of chaos and joy in public places.”

One of the most famous missions we are known for is the Grand central station freeze. Over 200 “agents” joined in and went to the Grand Central Station in New York. At exactly 2:30, everyone froze in place for 5 minutes.

What would people do if 200 people froze in a public place? How would they respond? There were many reactions to this: people would laugh and point, others would think that there was a epidemic, and even a female NYPD cop thought that this was some sort of terrorist scheme. In class, we learned how people react in terms of social relations. I think this entire experiment put that to the test. We were able to see the frustration-aggression principle in action. It was interesting to see what poses people made when they were frozen. Some dropped papers, some were kissing, and others were just standing. This same mission was replicated in many places: 42 cities in 25 different countries. Full video: http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=jwMj3PJDxuo

In my opinion, I think that this entire on-going experiment of improvisation gives a good perspective of people’s reality. I learned in class about social psychology and conformity. Every time I go to an event, I observe this about those who are not part of the group. The general reaction is of course, stunned, then baffled. Others are worried that there is something wrong, and even others show anger as shown in this mission.
