PURDUE UNIVERSITY School of Mechanical Engineering ME 309L - Fluid Mechanics Laboratory - Fall 2009 Experiment 1: Introduction to the Laboratory STUDENT INSTRUCTIONS Objective: The objectives of this experiment are to locate sources of data, to make some fundamental calculations, and to introduce you to experimental uncertainty. Reference: Fox, R.W., Pritchard, P.J., and McDonald, A.T. Introduction to Fluid Mechanics , 7th ed., Chapters 1 through 3, Appendix A, Appendix F, Appendix G, plus lab handouts. Preparation: Read this handout. Perform the experiment using the procedure described in the Laboratory Policy and Procedures handout and following the instructions given below. Performing the Experiment: 1. Review the lab instructions in this document. 2. Read and record the dry bulb temperature in the laboratory using the thermometer attached to the barometer. Measure and record the barometer height in millimeters of mercury. Correct the observed barometer reading for temperature. Calculate the barometric pressure in units of mm of Hg, psia, and kPa. 3. Estimate the uncertainty in your values of temperature and barometric pressure (use the procedure outlined in Appendix F in the text). 4. Use the measured temperature and corrected barometric pressure to calculate the actual air density in the laboratory. Assume ideal gas behavior and use thermodynamic data from Table A.6 in the text. 5. Determine the uncertainty in the computed value of air density in the laboratory. 6. Properties of standard air at sea level are given in Table 3.1 of the text. Prepare a table similar to that on the next page. Comment on the agreement between your measured values and those given in the text.
