Equilibrium for Rigid and Deformable Bodies Equilibrium Equations: R = Σ F x i + Σ F y j + Σ F z k = 0 C = Σ M x i + Σ M y j + Σ M z k = 0 Or Σ F x = 0 Σ F y = 0 Σ F z = 0 Σ M x = 0 Σ M y = 0 Σ M z = 0

More about Forces External Forces applied externally or due to reaction from supports; have effect on equilibrium of body External Applied Forces: tend to cause a body to move in some direction or rotate about some axis. External Reaction Forces: due to supports or connections to oppose the tendency of applied forces to cause motion and hold body in equilibrium Internal Forces hold the parts that made up a body together or the atoms that form the body together; form equal and opposite pairs; do not affect equilibrium of body but must conform to equilibrium conditions.
Free Body Diagram of Rigid Bodies FBD is a sketch showing the body separated from all other interacting bodies and with all external forces acting on body Procedure to draw FBD 1. Decide which body or combination of bodies to be included 2. Sketch the outline of the isolated or free body 3. Go around boundary of free body and identify all forces and moments exerted by contacting or interacting bodies; label forces (magnitude and direction if known; letter symbols if unknown; sense of unknown force will be reconciled by the algebraic sign of the calculated value where “+” means correct assumption and “-” means incorrect assumption) 4. Establish and draw coordinate system to use to solve problem
