It started out as a system of pencil, paper, and manual counting. It has blossomed into a functional system that makes use of the latest technologies such as scanners, bar codes, and computers to track inventory in large organizations. Although some of these technologies are not economically feasible for smaller properties, such as Statler, the leaps and bounds of inventory management are easily evident. Not only can these systems better track inventory, they can also make recommendation based on improved data management. The ultimate goal of these information systems is to increase the bottom-line and performance for the service industry. Adaco is the inventory management of choice for many hotel chains, as well as many individual properties such as the Statler Hotel. However, Adaco is not the only player in the game. They are constantly competing with companies such as Abacus 21, Inc. and InvoTech Systems Inc. for the lucrative contracts associated with signing a hotel or hotel chain. Abacus might be the most similar to Adaco because it offers many of the same functionalities as an off- the-shelf software. InvoTech Systems also drives to increase bottom-line by regulating inventory, but it centers more of its focus on back-of-house operations such as laundry services and uniforms. Because these firms have many similarities, many hospitality companies have difficulty choosing. Often, whoever can give the best deal will secure the contract. The STM of the Statler provides a snapshot of the current state of the system. It explains how the business strategy attempts to solve the problems and challenges associated with the Statler. It fully examines the IT, people, processes, and organizational structure as well as the relationships between each aspect associated with the inventory management system. Sometimes it is beneficial to separate the Statler Hotel and the Hotel School, which both use the system. More decision-making power is given to the Hotel in terms of inventory management systems, demonstrated by the approximately twelve food requisition coordinators for the hotel versus one food requisition coordinator for the Hotel School. The technology is based around the Adaco Eclipse software since Statler is not large enough to require scanners or other equipment, or for them to be economically feasible. In the inventory management stone age, stock was manually counted, requisitions were handwritten, given to coordinators, and orders were finally faxed to companies. This can now all be done on the system connected to a network. The first system Statler invested in was SeaBoard, created by a Hotelie grad, but was soon replaced by Adaco.
