Murdock 1 Zak Murdock Mrs. Jacobs Period AB 10-25-06 Catch 22 is a name given to a phrase where one is trapped by contradictory conditions, basically a lose-lose situation. Catch 22 is a perfect name chosen for the novel written by Joseph Heller because the novel shows how a soldier, Yossarian, in World War II is stuck in the war because of catch 22. After having to leave the medical ward because of the Texan pointing out that mostly everyone was not ill, led to the soldiers going back to the front. Yossarian came to hate the war and wanted to find a way out, however he could not leave because he was labeled sane for having stated he was insane. Therefore there was not a way out for Yossarian because of this catch 22 being if one states they are insane one is sane enough to realize one is insane. Not only does the Heller display confusion represented by the catch 22 he also displays themes of guilt and greed throughout his novel. Captain Yossarian did not always strongly dislike the war.
