Therefore, as one climbs a mountain the air becomes thinner as elevation increases. The air on top of a mountain has a less number of objects for air particles to collide than the air at sea level, thus causing the lower atmospheric pressure. 52) When the liquid nitrogen is poured onto the inflated balloon, the kinetic energy from the gas particles is transferred to the particles inside the balloon. The particles inside the balloon are very much spread out thus causing the balloon to be inflated. However when the temperature decreases, the particles of a gas tend to move closer together. Therefore explaining why the balloon shrank when the nitrogen was poured onto it. The kinetic energy of the cold liquid nitrogen forced the molecules inside the balloon to move closer together instead of staying spread out. Afterwards, there was no more kinetic energy being transferred by the liquid nitrogen and the temperature returned
