Zak Murdock 9-19-06 The Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001, also know as the USA PATRIOT Act that our President George Bush signed on October 21, 2001. The Patriot Act was conducted as a response to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Its main purpose is to expand the authority of law enforcement against terrorism, as well as detecting and prosecuting other crimes associated with terrorism. However the public opinion to this act is indifferent. The Patriot Act creates controversey between supporters of both the individual rights perspective and the public order advocates. Those who are supporters of the individual-rights perspective may not be so avid in supporting the Patriot Act. This may be due to the act enabling law enforcement to expand their authority in fighting terrorism, which totally goes against those who wish to protect personal freedoms and civil rights within society.
