Zak Murdock Honors Eng. 11 Mrs. Jacobs 28 August 2006 Real “Gentleman” Throughout The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald the qualities of both a real gentleman and not a real gentleman are displayed. Fitzgerald uses Nick Carraway to display the qualities of a real gentleman. Fitzgerald uses Tom Buchanan to display what a real gentleman is not. However, after reading The Great Gatsby one may wonder what really is a real “gentleman”? A real gentleman is one who is very respectful not only to other people but also to themselves, such as Nick Carraway. A real gentleman would have more respect for themselves and others than to go to town with another woman behind his wife’s back, especially if the so called real gentleman has a family to take care of like Tom Buchanan

One who is polite and caring of other people beside themselves would classify as a real gentleman. A real gentleman must have values of which they live by and these values must be ones of respect and etiquette. There are a number of people who are genuine real gentleman. There are also a number of people who are not real gentleman. It does not take a lot to be a real gentleman. In order for one to be classified as a real gentleman one must have respect for both themselves and others, they must be loyal, and they must be faithful to loved ones. Without these important qualities one will never be considered a real gentlemen just as Tom Buchanan was not a real gentleman....
