Jesse Peterson Dr. Ansberry Old Testament 3/15/2010 Deuteronomy “If from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find Him if you look for Him with all your heart and with all your soul.” ~Deuteronomy 4:29 Deuteronomy—the fifth book of the Hebrew’s Old Testament canon. It contains some of Moses’ speeches to the Israelites following their enslavement in Egypt, and calls from God. The book also reviews a number of God’s laws for His people, and maybe most importantly, a personal plea from Moses because this is his last chance with the people he loved. He rose up to God’s calling in Exodus to lead His children from pharaoh’s hand, and in the process grew to love the people as much as he could; and now, following the freedom from oppression, is God’s chosen leader through the deserts to the Promised Land. Throughout Deuteronomy, there are a number of messages or purposes that are very prevalent within the pages of the book. The first message is the idea of the covenant. A crucial theme found in Deuteronomy deals with God’s covenant relationship with the Israelites. Also, within the covenant idea, there is a subgroup of messages that seem to compliment the book as well. We see that God’s faith to the Israelites in the past inspires the covenant that He makes with Moses for His people. God wants His people to see that out of His grace and faithfulness , He encourages them to have faith in Him throughout their lives and into the future.
