Abbott Suger - He believed that the church of Saint Denis was too small to serve as the official  church of the French kings. He began to rebuild Saint- Denis in 1135 by erecting a new west  façade with sculptural portals Archaic-   Statues that were posed stiffly with a comical smile, not to be taken literally, the smile  is the Archaic sculptor’s way of indicating that the person portrayed is alive. By adopting such a  convention, the Greek artist signaled a very different intention from any Egyptian counterpart Atmospheric perspective-   creates the illusion of distance by the greater diminution of color  intensity, the shift in color toward an almost neutral blue, and the blurring of contours as the  intended distance between eye and object increases.
