Gene Doctors 1. What are some of the diseases mentioned in the video? a. Fatal familial insomnia (caused by a genetic mutation, very rare and currently no cure), inherit eye disease (started in early childhood, was attracted to light), Duchenne (muscular dystrophy, no dystrophin gets made because a chromosome such as 52 is missing), cystic fibrosis (wheezing, blue face, the channel that helps the ions and stuff flow gets stuck and mucus builds up, bacteria builds up too), 2. What is gene editing? a. Gene editing is the editing of genes. It is the process of removing the mutated gene and replacing it with a new and corrected gene that rids of the mutation. There has been other drugs that are able to help with controlling the disease. 3. How are viruses used? a. They can be used as delivery vehicles. They hijack the cells and duplicate the virus but doctors now use the virus to duplicate the correct gene and replace the mutation with that one. 4. What is CRISPR? How can it help gene editing?
