Vibrations Vibrations are a common phenomenon. They are oscillatory motions about some position of equilibrium. Oscillating motion of a mass on a spring
Period The time required for a full oscillation (one round trip) is called the period of oscillation. A 1-meter long pendulum has a period of two seconds per oscillation.

Frequency Frequency is the inverse of the period, Frequency = For example, for a period of 2 seconds per oscillation, the frequency is ½ oscillation per second or 0.5 Hertz. 1 Hertz (Hz) = 1 oscillation per second. Period 1
Amplitude The greatest distance from the position of equilibrium is the amplitude of oscillation. Amplitude

Waves When vibrations “propagate” (i.e. move from one area to another), we get “waves”. Water waves Light waves Radio String
Wave Motion Transverse Waves For transverse waves the wave’s amplitude is perpendicular to the wave’s motion.

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
