Zizi Chen Partners: Xin Hao Lin, Nooiz Uddin Instructor: Prof. Etan Bourkoff Performed Date: March 11, 2010 Torque – Rotational Equilibrium Objective: To gain a quantitative understanding of the concepts of torque and moment of inertia, and verify that, when an object is in rotational equilibrium, the net torque on the object is zero. Apparatus: Ruler Support Weights Hangers Procedure : 1. Balance the meter stick in a horizontal position on its knife-edge supports with no weights attached. Record the point on the stick at with it balances. 2. Suspend two or three masses from the meter stick as indicated in the case and move them until the meter stick is balanced. Record the mass values and their positions. 3. Move the hangers to the position where the case states. 4. Determine the lever arm associated with each mass and record the values. 5. Repeat from step 2 to step 4, due to different situations in other cases. 1
