Unformatted text preview: MTH 234 Sections 004-007 Syllabus Spring 2010 Instructor: Irina Kadyrova, Ph.D. Office: A-333 Wells Hall Phone: (517)353 - 4680 E-mail: [email protected] (best way to contact). Office Hours: MWF 9:00-10:00, A333 WH or other times by appointment. Math 234 is a 4-credit course. There are 3 lectures and 1 recitation each week. Text: Thomas' Calculus, 11th edition. Also, some supplemental materials for the course are posted at http://www.mth.msu.edu/~milan/ac/calc/234/ Evaluation: There will be four 50-minute Exams each worth 100 pts, seven announced Quizzes worth 20 pts each for a total of 100 pts (the two lowest will be dropped), a 200-pts uniform comprehensive Final Exam. The lowest in class exam score will be replaced with the final exam percentage if a passing score is achieved on all four in class exams. The Total for the course is 700 points. Your actual total number of points will be converted into a percentage and your grade will be determined by the following grading scale: 0 100 % 5 89 % 9 84 % 3 78 % 4.0 3.5 3.0 2.5 65 72 % 60 64 % 55 59 % 0 54 % 2.0 1.5 1.0 0.0 Grade change policy. If you have any questions regarding grading of any of your examinations, you should return the examinations to your teacher and attach short note with your questions before leaving the classroom, and plan to speak with your teacher about your concerns during the office hours. Otherwise, once the examination has left the classroom, no grading changes will be made. Calculators/computers: Use of calculators/computers is not allowed on 50-min exams, quizzes, Final exam. Attendance: You are expected to attend all meetings of the class. If you must miss a class, plan to get notes for that day from a classmate. Be advised that the schedule on pages 3 and 4 is tentative. Missing an Exam without an advance valid excuse presented to the Instructor will result in a score of 0 pts. No make ups are given. Commercial travel schedules are not excuses. There will be no make up or excused Quizzes. Any student having another final scheduled during the time of the uniform final exam time or having two other final exams scheduled the day of that exam may take the make-up exam, which will be given the next day. If you qualify for the make-up final exam, in order to take it you must fill out a request in A212 Wells Hall in advance. Students taking the make-up final exam MUST have a pictured ID. 1 Homework: A number of homework problems for study (listed here) have been selected for each lecture in the course, and additional problems have been selected for exam review. These problems provide appropriate practice in the material that you are expected to learn from the course and demonstrate on quizzes and exams. Very few of assigned HW problems will be discussed either in lectures or during recitation classes. Your primary recourse for help with these problems is the Math Learning Center. The Math Learning Center is located on the 1st floor of the A-Wing of Wells Hall. Sign in at the window in the "elevator lobby". Math Learning Center Schedule for SS 2010.
