BIBC Week 6 Answer Sheet for HO: Structures of the Sarcomere: 1. The A band represents the length of the myosin along the sarcomere. This can include the actin as well if it overlaps with the myosin. It is dark under the microscope because it is a thick band and will block more light. 2. The I band represents the actin only. It can extend pass the Z line even though the picture shows the actins cut off after the Z line. The I band does not include the areas where the actin and myosin overlap. 3. The Z disk stabilizes the sarcomere and keeps the whole structure intact. The actins are anchored onto the Z disks. 4. The thin filaments are the actin and are smaller structures compared to the thick filaments. 5. Thick filaments are the myosin and are thicker obviously. 6. The A band stays the same during contraction because it includes actin and myosin overlapping regions. 7. The I band decreases during contraction because it does not include myosin actin overlapping regions. As fiber contracts, the overlapping regions grow and I band
