First notice of Land Old World People West Africa Similar Cultures European Culture   and Society The Renaissance Population Growth - Not only did Columbus notice the land, but Taino Indians noticed him,  from the land called Guanahani - The Indians were welcoming the Europeans with smiles, but Columbus  enslaved them and brought them back with him - It would be 100 years before self-sustaining colonies would exist - Many different societies arose before 1492 in the grasslands and  European regions - Most were hunter-gatherers or agricultural communities - Yet some warring tribes also existed throughout regions - The Sahara Desert separated West Africans and the rest of the world - By 3000 B.C. people grew grain and herded livestock - Caravans began to travel about the desert, trading with the  Mediterranean coast - From A.D. 600-1600 three empires arose: Ghana, Mali, and Songhai,
