US Artem Kholodenko Mods 6.7.8 0109 Notes for pgs. 37-47 The Conquerors Good things from the New and Old Worlds Black Legend Footholds in North America British and French come to America- Columbus was Americas first slave trader and the first Spanish conquerors or conquistadors . - His first colony was Hispaniola , were he began exporting Indian slaves and created encomiendas grants for the right to extract labor and other tribute from the Indians of a designated district- From the beginning, the Indians were exploited to the out most degree- Soon Spanish settlers were going all though the Caribbean in search of Indian slaves and gold- In 1519, the restless nobleman Hernan Cortes (1485-1547) led a small band of followers to the Mexican coast- Destroying his boats and gathering Indian allies, he marched inland over towering mountain passes to conquer Mexico - Cortes attacked and often won, due to his weapons and horses, which terrified the Aztec- During the rest of 16-th Century other conquerors came to solicit a new empire New Spain- Between 1519 & 1600, the population of Mexico shrunk from 25 million to between 1 and 2 million- Epidemics of smallpox broke out because Indians lacked antibodies- In some areas up to 90% of the population was lost- But new things like chickens, horses, cattle, sheep, wheat and other grains were brought to the New World- The New World also offered much: corn, beans, tomatoes, squash, pumpkin, vanilla, cacao, avocados, pineapples, chilis, peanuts, kayaks and much more- Mating of different races began between the old blacks and new Indians, and also the Spanish, because most of their population was male- Was northern Europeans vision of a tyrannical, fanatically Catholic Spain intent on conquering everything in sight- Most of the horrors which took place were gotten from the journal of the friar, Bartolome de Las Casas (1474-1566) - During 15-th century the Europeans explored the North American Coast- Except for a Spanish base at St. Augustine, Florida, all attempts for establishing colonies failed- In 1607-1608 the English and French finally began to exploit knowledge gained during the previous century New Spains Northern...
