Wilson on Altruism ___ ABY BDX ABY DEX ABX BCY ACY BDX DEY BEX Altruism vs. egoism Tertullian writes that the blood of martyrs is the seed of the church As mammals would be and ants would not we are fascinated by the forms of self sacrifice Such altruistic suicide is the ultimate act of sacrifice, but it is still a great puzzle In spite of a fair abundance of such examples, it is only in the lower animals, insects, that we encounter altruistic sacrifices on level of humans This means that the act cannot be ruled a divine attribute We don’t have to assume that self sacrifice is something purely moral and profound It likely has a more basic biological explanation Potential Problem: how does altruism persist? A basic problem arises: fallen heroes do not have children
