Anthropology – o “The study of man” Man = “anthro” o “The study of humans” o Anthropology is divided up differently in different countries o The U.S. divided anthropology into 4 separate areas or fields o 4 subsections of anthropology in the U.S. The four fields of anthropology o 1. Archaeology Focuses on past societies Focus on physical remains from past societies & trying to piece them together Architecture, mummies, food remains, pottery, buildings, anything that was left behind by past civilizations Look at middens Trash heaps Able to learn what they wore, ate threw away, etc. o 2. Physical anthropology Looking at the development of our human body Evolution of humans Forensics Primatology = the study of apes Why study primates? o Evolutionary reasons o 3. Linguistic anthropology Focus on human languages Linguistic & linguistic anthropology are different Linguistic anthropologist are Interested in the universality of human languages
