Noah – 3 sons - Shem – behave nobly - Ham – embarrassed Noah - Japheth – behave nobly Noah curses Ham’s descendents - They will be “servants of servants” to descendents of Shem and Japheth o Servants of servants = slavery Shem – means – “close to God” - The word Semites is derived from Shem Japheth – means – “Beautiful” - Europeans – “the beautiful people” Ham – means – “Hot – dark” - Africa - Ham’s descendents were cursed to be “servants” or “slaves” Native Americans were also said to be “partial” descendants of Ham - Inevitable that they will be enslaved and wiped out - Weaker society of people that would eventually die off – biological sense of weakness - Less fit than other races – racial arguments or 1800’s and early 1900’s - Descendants of ham were said to be weaker & unfit Religious arguments were used to justify slavery and inequality until the 1800’s - Abolitionists – argue against racism and slavery with Bible - Scientists try to justify slavery and inequality - In the 1800’s, many religious groups known as abolitionists, begin to speak out against slavery and racial inequality - At the same time, however, many western scientists were claiming that non-Europeans were inferior o They claimed their research showed Europeans were superior Paul Broca [KNOW HIM] - French anthropoligist - Founded the society of anthropolofy in Paris in 1861 - Declared Europeans were better than everyone else and he had proof - 1861 – US in civil war [race & slavery a big issue] - Said that Africans were less human than all other races
