Young Building Teaching Assistants: Jeremy Jelliffe and Nataliya Plesha Course Information and Objectives: The course is designed to help students understand a broad spectrum of domestic and international issues relating to human population growth and welfare, food production and distribution, and protection of the environment. Credits earned by taking ARE 1110 may be counted towards meeting the University’s General Education Requirements in Content Area 2 (Social Sciences). The specific objectives of the course are (1) to introduce basic economic principles and concepts that can be used for analyzing environmental and resource problems, (2) to identify and study several of the important global, national, and local issues relating to population, food and the environment, and (3) to apply the analytical tools and concepts taught in the course to assess alternative economic, political, and technological strategies for addressing these issues. Course Requirements : Grades for the course will be based on performance in a mid-term exam, a final exam, short quizzes, homework assignments, performance in discussion sections, and an optional term-paper. Guidelines concerning the term-paper are provided on the last page of this handout. Exams and quizzes rely heavily on material covered in class and in discussion sections led by the teaching assistants. Consequently, students who have regular attendance are more likely to get good grades. There will be no make-up exams or quizzes. Also, homework assignments should be turned in (during class) when due and will not be accepted after solutions have been presented in a discussion section. The following tables indicate the relative weights of the course requirements in determining grades.
