Chapter 16 15:41 1.  Before 1937, judicial activism arose to define the relationship of the  government to the economy.  After 1937, on what did judicial activists primarily  focus? Judicial activists focused more on personal liberties and social equality, and  the potential conflict  between the two.   They also tried to enlarge the scope of personal freedom 2.  How does partisanship affect judicial attitudes?  How does ideology affect  Supreme Court selection? Partisanship affects the decisions that judges will make because Democratic  judges make liberal decisions and Republican judges make conservative  decisions. Party Identification influences personal ideology Ideology affects how the Supreme Court justices are selected based on the  personal ideologies of the president.   3.  United States citizens are generally protected from double jeopardy (being  tried twice for the same crime).  However, under the doctrine of dual sovereignty,  state and federal authorities can prosecute the same person for the same  conduct (p. 451).  Why does the Supreme Court allow this practice to continue? 1.) Each level of government has the right to enact laws serving its own
