UCLA Economics 170 Monopoly and Competition SPRING 2010 Prof. E. McDevitt Office: Bunche 2255 Office Hours: MW 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. e-mail: mcdevitt@econ.ucla.edu COURSE DESCRIPTION : Competition, monopoly, efficiency and antitrust implications of various market structures, natural monopoly, horizontal mergers, cartels, oligopoly, welfare effects of price discrimination, monopolistic competition, predatory pricing, vertical integration and vertical restraints, advertising and the Klein-Leffler model, durable goods monopoly, patents. LECTURE NOTES AND STUDY QUESTIONS : There is no textbook for the class. ASUCLA has lecture notes available in Ackerman. I will be providing my own study questions. These questions will not be collected or graded, but you should find them useful in preparing for exams.
