South Asia Definitions 1) Wet Monsoon : The rainy season produced by an onshore airflow that dominates for weeks, occurring in the hot summer months, April to October, when low pressure over the land draws in moisture-laden air from the adjacent cooler ocean. This monsoon is especially pronounced throughout coastal Asia 2) Tropical Cyclone : A tropical storm with sustained wind velocities in excess of 74 miles per hour. These storms are also called hurricanes or typhoons, depending on geographic location. 3) Caste System : The strict segregation of people according to social class in Hindu society, largely on the basis of ancestry and occupational status 4) Partition : The division of British India, upon Independence in 1947, into India and the two Pakistan’s. The division was intended to accommodate the two (2) major religious groups of the Indian Subcontinent, the Hindu’s in Indian and the Muslims in the two Pakistan’s. 5)
