Ryan Kusy Ms. Siwak Honors Chemistry Fireworks! Fireworks have been a source of entertainment and celebration for hundreds of years.  Their dazzling colors capture the audience’s attention every time they go off. But has anyone  truly wondered how these amazing fireworks actually work? Well, gunpowder was the basis for  fireworks, which was brought to Europe in the 1200s. During the middle ages, fireworks were  extremely simple and consisted of only red, orange, and yellow colors. Not until the 1800s did  fireworks begin to include different shades of red, green, blue, and the occasional purple and for  many years this colors have stayed the same. Recently colors have become more vivid and  vibrant. This is because of new discoveries in developing more efficient fireworks. Metal  chlorides, which fluoresce strongly in the visible wavelengths, are included now in all modern  fireworks. Barium chloride produces green, strontium chloride produces red, and copper  chloride produces blue. The problem was that these compounds are so hygroscopic that they
