Purpose:  The purpose of this lab is to measure, using a calorimeter, the energy changes accompanying  neutralization reactions.  References: Nelson, John H. and Kemp, Kenneth C. Laboratory Experiments  to accompany Chemistry: The   Central Science , 9 th  ed. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson Education, Inc., 2003. Balanced Chemical Reactions: HCl (aq)  + NaOH (aq)    NaCl (aq)  + H 2 0 (l) HC 2 H 3 O 2(aq)  + NaOH (aq)    NaC 2 H 3 O 2(aq)  + H 2 0 (l) Hazards and Safety: Goggles must be worn at all times. Hair and lose clothing must be removed or tied back. Be careful when lighting the Bunsen burner that nothing flammable is near it, unless  instructed by the lab. Watch while pouring the hot water and acid into the calorimeter that nothing is splashed  out of the container. Do not remove the temperature probe from the liquid until the full time has elapsed and  your data is recorded. Do not remove the cardboard square until the full time has elapsed and the data is
