i. The U.S. should get involved because then the Kuwaitis will give us better prices on oil
Level: Preconvention
Stage: 2. Self-interest orientation
Why? This student is only using war to get something for them self. In this argument the student is
only thinking about self. Even though self in this case is the country as a whole.
ii. The U.S. should get involved because evil is on the march and it would be morally wrong to allow it to continue
Level: Conventional
Stage: 2. Law & Order
Why?
The student is showing concern for breaking of the rules (or morals). The student want to put
an end to the rule breaking.
iii. The U.S. should get involved because the situation is extreme enough that society’s rights are threatened and need to be
defended
Level: Post conventional
Stage: 2. Universal Ethical Principles
Why? The words that tip of that it is this stage are “society’s rights are threatened and need to be
defended.” This lets us know that the student is thinking on more of a universal level.
