Objectives: The objective of laboratory #2 was to understand the effect of introducing a measuring device into a circuit, and how the instrument affects the measurement. Apparatus or Equipment: o Digital Ammeter o Digital Voltmeter o Decade Resistance Box (max of 1,000,000Ω) o Voltage Source Procedure: Ammeter: Part 1: Determining the internal resistance of the digital ammeter. Figure 1: Circuit setup 1 from ECE 309 Lab Manual 1. For the above circuit, set the range of the ammeter to the 2mA scale. 2. First, determine the current “I” in the following circuit without the variable resistance in the circuit by taking out R s from the above circuit. 3. Then connect the resistance box in the circuit as shown (add in R s). 4. Adjust the resistance until the meter reads half of its original value. 5. The internal resistance of the ammeter is now equal to the value of the resistance box, thus R m = R s when the I new = ½ I old .
