Chapter 7 Lecture Page 217 The Preschool years are the years between 3 and 6. The average 2 year old weight’s 25 to 30 lbs and is close to 34 inches tall. On their second birthday you should be able to measure their height and double it to see how tall they will be as an adult. By 6 years old they weight around 46 lbs. And around 46 inches tall. Pages 217 & 218. Nutritionally from 3 to 6 there needs change. They are growing slower compared to infancy and therefore need less food to maintain their growth. Children know how much they need to eat. However, sometimes parents worry that their children aren’t eating enough. If we encourage them to eat when they aren’t’ hungry we may encourage obesity. Which is on the rise in the older preschooler. Please know that if we exert a great amount of control over what our 3 year olds eat we may be preventing him from developing his own internal eating cues. Mealtime should not be wartime. Prepare nutritional meals and leave your children alone! They will have their likes and dislikes.
