Page 1 of 3 SOC 483 – Outline 10 for Chapter 10 (Globalization Theories) Anthony Giddens and the “runaway world” of globalization – overlap with his theory on juggernaut of modernity. Sees a close link between globalization and risk, especially the rise of what he calls manufactured risk. Much of this world is beyond our control but giddeons is not totally pessimistic. We can limit our problems. Some hope for democracy such as E.U. Emphasizes the role of the West in general and the U.S. in particular. Gloabalization a 2 way process. Globalization squeezes sideways producing new areas that may cut across nations. He sees the emergence of a global cosmopolitan society. Fundamentalism uses global forces in order to further its ends. Can take various forms – religious, ethnic, nationalist, political but always problematic because it is at odds with cosmopolitanism and bc it is linked to violence.
