CEG/EE 260 Dr. Sridhar Ramachandran Lab 1: Combinational Analysis (a.k.a The Car Door Status Detector lab) CEG/EE 260 PURPOSE The purpose of this introductory laboratory project is to introduce students to basic digital devices as well we implementation and simulation tools available in the laboratory. In this lab, we will implement a purely combinational device: a car door status detector. In week one of this lab, students will first build, test, and characterize a simulation of the device. In week two of this lab students will then build, test, and characterize a simulation of the device. Students will be asked to measure and contrast the two approaches and comment on non-ideal characteristics. CAR DOOR STATUS DETECTOR Consider a simple electronic device that indicates the car status. Whenever the ignition key is in place the detector is sensitive to the door status. Assume that we have an ignition key detector that has one output KEY that has the value 1 when key is in ignition and the value is 0 otherwise. Likewise assume that we have four door status detectors that have outputs S1, S2, S3 and S4 that have value 1 when their respective door is closed and their value is 0 otherwise. Finally, assume that we have electronically controlled display lights L1, L2, L3 and L4 on the dash-board that inform us the status of the corresponding doors when the key is in the ignition. The device that we wish to build is the detector. Given the values of KEY and S1, S2, S3 and S4 it must correctly control the value of L1, L2, L3, and L4. Thus KEY and S1, S2, S3, S4 are its primary inputs and L1, L2, L3 and L4 are the device’s primary outputs. PRELAB
