Unformatted text preview: FRS 136: Living in a Polluted Greenhouse Rik Sengupta Paper 3 Between the Cliffs of a Canyon: the Harmful Effects and Remedies of Urban Street Canyons The Article The article I will base my argument on is just a report: Santosh K. Prajapati, B. D. Tripathi, and Vinita Pathaks small report of their findings about urban planning and its effects in Varanasi, a bustling town in India. The article is titled Distribution of vehicular pollutants in street canyons of Varanasi, India: a different case. 1 In this article, they describe how they measured concentrations of certain particulate matter (SO 2 and CO) on both sides and at different heights of a street canyon (defined later) in Varanasi, by means of establishing six monitoring sites to measure and compare concentrations on either side of the street in question, and an additional four monitoring sites at different vertical levels to draw conclusions about the variation of concentration with altitude in an urban setting. Their results conclusively showed: 1. Concentration of both the pollutants viz. CO and SO2 were approximately same at both ends of street. 2. Minimum concentration of CO and SO2 were observed at the place where main street canyon was intersected by narrow lane. 3. There is decrease of CO and SO2 concentration with height. 4. The dispersal of CO and SO2 in the street canyon will be even when vortex generated in a typical street canyon could be broken by narrow intersecting lane through which wind rushes and helps in pollutants dispersal. 1 1 Santosh K. This type of streets can be used by urban planners so that there is proper ventilation and dispersal of pollutants. 2 The Problem As this article almost conclusively shows, lack of proper urban planning spells disaster for most cities. The effect is especially pronounced in populous Asian cities, where town planning usually takes a backseat in terms of priority. This negligence of proper urban planning leads to a huge negative effect from air pollutants, all the more so because these cities present some of the worst cases in terms of air pollution due to toxic emissions from cars and factories; in the developing countries, this problem of pollution, coupled with inefficient town planning, often leads to serious health hazards....
