Lauren Napolitano December 11 2009 Concept Essay #3 Cultures throughout the world have several different ways of communicating their unique aspects with each other. One of these ‘languages’ that cultures use to communicate is through dance. Dances can say a lot about a particular culture. They can reveal values, beliefs, style, religion, and much more. For this essay, we viewed two dances from two very different cultures. Each dance is indicative of the culture from which it came. Each style of dancing requires different movement elements. In particular, I will be discussing synchronization and repetition. Vissicaro describes synchronization as involving “a mutual organization of time between the dancers and accompaniment and/or a group of people moving at the same time in relatively the same way” (pg). Vissicaro also discusses repetition when she says, “repeated exposure to specific sensory information may produce similar results which forms a pattern” (pg).
