Lauren Napolitano October 23, 2009 DAH 201 Concept Essay 2 Dance presents itself in many different forms throughout different cultures. In the textbook we learn that Joann Keali’inohomoku brought the term “dance culture” into use. Dance culture consists of more than just a single performance, as it is a part of the total cultural knowledge system. Dance culture is dynamic in the sense that the context is always changing. There are both differences and similarities to the way that the context informs knowledge construction. Both of the video clips are very different types of dance set in very different cultures. The first video, Flamenco , is set in Spain and shows dancers performing traditional forms of Spanish dance. The second video, Children of Theater Street , is set at a school called the Vaganova Choreographic Institute in Russia and shows dancers learning ballet. Flamenco is a documentary about Spanish dance in which the viewer is placed right into the environment of the performances. There is no narration throughout the
