Lauren Napolitano Extra Credit Ch 1 What Is Act Utilitarianism? 1.) Stated in your own words, what is Feldman’s definition of utility? Feldman’s definition of utility rests on the idea that both pleasure and pain can be quantified. In this case, pleasure is measured in hedons and pain is measured in dolors. Both of these units are equivalent in that they can be added or subtracted. Therefore the definition of utility of an act is the sum of dolors that would result from that act subtracted from the sum of hedons that would result from that act. 2.) State Feldman’s version of Act Utilitarianism that he regards as the best version. Feldman regards U 7 as the best version of Act Utilitarianism. U 7 states that an act is right if and only if there is no other act the agent could have done instead that has higher utility than it has. 3.) Why, according to Feldman, is U 6 a defective version?
