Lauren Napolitano Extra Credit Chs 7-8 Gay Marriage 1.) How does Sullivan use certain facts about domestic partnerships to argue in favor of gay marriage? Sullivan explains that domestic partnerships are very tricky in the sense that you have to prove financial interdependence, shared living arrangements and a commitment to mutual caring in order to qualify for one. However, you don’t need to be involved in a sexual relationship or even really be in an intimate relationship. Technically, an elder and his or her live-in nurse could qualify, two close college students, etc. Therefore, domestic partnerships are much more complicated in that they open up a bunch of questions and subjective judicial decision-making about who can qualify. Whereas with marriage, you either are married or are not married; making the situation much more simple. 2.) Why does Sullivan believe that allowing gay marriage would not hurt straight marriage?
