Study Questions August 24-28 Lauren Napolitano 1.) According to Asher, how are polls used? Asher says that polls are used to help Americans learn about the opinions and attitudes of people in other nations. This of course is concerning what they think about Americans and their culture, foreign policy, etc. Asher also says that polls are being used beyond the basic function of informing. He claims that polls are being used to manipulate the public and often convince them in ways that are beneficial to the polls’ sponsors. Also, polls play a role in policymakers’ deliberations on a subject. Polls allow democracy to work at its best in that they are the best way to measure public opinion and allow everyone’s views to be represented. 2.) What are pseudopolls? Pseudopolls are polls that have no way of telling what group of people they are getting information from. These polls have many flaws, as they are not scientific. Therefore they are not an accurate representation of the population. 3.) Give an example of a pseudopoll.
