Lauren Napolitano February 16, 2010 POS 410: Assignment 2 I agree with the statement, “The changes made by the reformers resulted in more effective, efficient, and accountable city governments.” The reformers began gaining steam once people started becoming more and more frustrated with machine politics. People who were not a part of the machine in some way were not accounted for when it came to city politics. The reformers sought to “run government the right way” by restructuring city governments so elections were once again fair, and the city was run justly. They actually made the average American city government more effective, efficient, and accountable. There were several policies and plans implemented by the reformers that made city government elections fair. One of these plans was the direct primary, in which voters select the nominees for a candidate for office. This was a change from the decisions made in “smoke-filled rooms” where big bosses would cut deals (Christensen
