Lauren Napolitano April 27, 2010 POS 410: Assignment 5 According to the website, (http://faculty.chass.ncsu.edu/garson/PA765/ethno.htm) the ethnographic method starts with the selection of a culture, followed by cultural immersion of the ethnographer who observes and studies the group and ultimately analyzes the situation. Kristen Hill Maher’s “Workers and Strangers: The Household Service Economy and the Landscape of Suburban Fear” touches on residents of suburbia and the growing phenomenon of “fortifying” their homes. Maher uses ethnography to learn about her subjects in a community in Orange County, California. She argues that the number of people who live in gated communities has proliferated widely since the 1970s. Maher adds that these gated communities tend to be socially homogenous in terms of race and class, thus making them exclusive. However, recently, working-class immigrants have been moving into suburban areas where the demand for service-sector workers is strong. This move, Maher argues, is what increasingly causes white suburban residents to “fort up”.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
