April 2, 2010 FotD: Agent green- fusarium oxysporum- drug control-kills plants that produce drugs EXAM 3: Lectures 16-24, Ch 5-8 Toxic Black Mold (Hurricane Katrina continued)- stachybotrys chartarum -Grows in almost perfect circles, wet, can form long black veins -One of the leading causes of sick building syndrome (illness due to the building in which you reside) -The fungus produces potent mycotoxins called satratoxins(present in individual spores- sickness from inhalation of the spores). Poisoning called stachybotryotoxicosis. -Spores of the fungus are in the soil. They are introduced into homes via water or dirt. -Fungus colonizes cellulose-based paper and ceiling tiles. (organic matter) -Detection by visual inspection and air sampling (waste of time in New Orleans, everyone has it) - Symptoms include: memory loss, coughing, chest pains, nose bleeds, cold and flu like symptoms, headache, bleeding lungs, internal lesions, seizures, fever. Long term exposure can lead to death. *What do you do about all of this toxic mold?
