COURSE GOALS: The purpose of this course is to examine themes and human experiences in early American history, 1492 - 1877. Topics include colonial cultures (2.5 weeks), the revolutionary era (2.5 weeks), development of democracy in national politics (3 weeks), economic and westward expansion and immigration (3 weeks), racial and sectional divisions (3 weeks), and reconstruction (1 week).
