Chapter 1 - Introduction 1. Know monism and dualism. 2. Know about split brain patients – what is done in this operation, and what does this tell us about how the brain is organized? 3. What is the relationship between genes and behavior? Chapter 2 – Structure and Functions of Cells of the Nervous System 1. What is the CNS? What is the PNS?

2. Know the structure and function of a neuron – soma, dendrite, axon, axon hillock, myelin, terminal button, node of Ranvier, and nucleus. 3. Know the different types of glia and their functions (astrocyte, microglia, oligodendrocyte, Schwann cell, radial glia).

4. What is the blood brain barrier? What forms it? Why is it important? 5. How is the membrane potential set up? (To understand this, you need to know potential, diffusion, electrostatic pressure, etc.) 6. Describe the basis of the action potential.

7. How is the action potential conducted? Know what saltatory conduction is, and what its benefits are. 8. What is the all-or-none law? 9. What is a synapse? Why is it important? 10. What is a neurotransmitter?

11. What is a receptor? What are the two major categories of receptor? What are the effects of activation of each type of receptor? 12.What is an EPSP? What is an IPSP? 13. What are the mechanisms by which the postsynaptic potential is terminated? 14. What is temporal summation? What is spatial summation?

Chapter 3 – Structure of the Nervous System 1. Know the vocabulary terms that describe direction in the nervous system (dorsal/ventral, rostral/caudal, etc.) 2. Know the three planes: horizontal, coronal (transverse, frontal), sagittal. 3. Know the name and function of the meninges.

What are the ventricles? What do they do? 5. Know the general changes in the brain that occur during development. 6. Remember that table with the divisions of the brain (Table 3.2)? Time to review that – memorization sucks, but how else will you know the terms? 7. Know the name and function of the brain regions in the book. Focus on those that came up again later in the course. 8. Know the cranial nerves. The table is still up on UB Learns if you need a copy. 9.
