Janelle Jose December 7, 2009 SSC/LAI 416 Research Paper Media is any form of mass communication. In 1999 the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a policy statement about media and children. In it, the organization discussed the benefits media education can have as well as the health risks TV poses to children, especially those under the age of two. "Pediatricians should urge parents to avoid television viewing for children under the age of 2 years. Although certain television programs may be promoted to this age group, research on early brain development shows that babies and toddlers have a critical need for direct interactions with parents and other significant caregivers (e.g., child care providers) for healthy brain growth and the development of appropriate social, emotional, and cognitive skills. Therefore, exposing such young children to television programs should be discouraged.“ In recent years children and the media have pretty much went hand in hand. consumption and literacy, gender, sex and relationship are all things children face in their daily television watching. Advertisement is becoming more and more of a issue in recent times, products are made and stores are designed specifically to appeal to kids. The average American child sees an astonishing ten to twenty thousand commercials every year. Advertisers spend about $700 million a year aiming advertising toward kids with the complete intent of making back all they invested plus much more. Young children are particularly vulnerable to the influence of commercial advertising. They do not have the capacity to evaluate it critically, and as a result parents are pressured to buy products such as cereal and toys. “If America's children and youth are to develop eating habits that help them avoid early onset diet-related chronic diseases, they have to reduce their intake of high-calorie, low-nutrient snacks, fast foods, and sweetened drinks, which make up a high proportion of the products marketed to them.” This quote zooms in on another growing issue with today children health and obesity. Health experts have long linked excessive TV-watching to obesity a significant health problem today. While watching TV, kids are inactive and tend to snack. They're also bombarded with ads that encourage them to eat unhealthy foods such as potato chips and empty-calorie soft drinks that often become preferred snack foods. The

amount of time a child spends watching TV also impacts obesity rates. According to one study, the likelihood of obesity among low-income multi-ethnic preschoolers between the ages of 1 and 5 increased for each hour per day of TV or video they viewed.
