Microorganisms can associate physically with other organisms in a variety of ways. Smaller organisms can be located on the surface larger organisms known as ectosymbiont One organism located within another organism as an endosymbiont Mutualism: relationship in which the host and the parasite both benefit. Cooperation and commensalism are two positive but not obligatory types of symbioses Cooperation benefits both organisms and is not obligatory Commensalism is a relationship in which one symbiont, benefits while the host is neither harmed not helped Predation: predator species attacks and usually kills its prey. Parasitism: a relationship between two organisms in which one benefits from the other and the host is usually harmed. Ammensalism: Unidirectional process based on the release of a specific compound by one organism which has a negative effect on another organism. For instance, production of antibiotics. Competition: when different organisms within a population or community try to acquire the same resource, whether this is a physical location or a particular limiting nutrient. Indigenous microbe Normal microbial flora or microbiota is a normally associated microorganism with the human body. The surface tissues for instance, skin, mucous membranes are constantly in contact with environmental microorganisms and they become readily colonized by various microbial species, one of which include normal microbial flora.
