Unformatted text preview: Exam Prep Spring 2009 Part 1: Data entry and formatting in Excel Use Matlab and Excel to find the grain size distribution from a hydrometer analysis. A hydrometer is an instrument used in soil mechanics laboratories to determine the grain size distribution of fine-grained soils (usually those passing the #200 Sieve). The hydrometer is a glass bulb that floats in prepared soil-water slurry. As sedimentation occurs, the density of the slurry decreases and the hydrometer floats lower in the slurry. Step 1.) Copy and paste the hydrometer data into Excel or Matlab. Data can be copied from Excel to a variable in Matlab using the variable editor. The readings for the hydrometer (time, reading, and temperature) are given in Table 1 and constants from the experiment are given in Table 2. Table 1: Example hydrometer readings Time (min) Hydrometer Reading, R [g/L] Temperature, T [C] 1 35.0 26.2 2 32.0 26.0 4 26.0 26.0 9 20.0 25.8 16 17.0 25.4 30 16.0 24.8 60 14.0 22.8 385 13.0 20.5 1031 12.0 20.020....
