Spring 2010
CEE 291 – PROBLEM SOLVING USING COMPUTER TOOLS
Homework 1
Solve these problems using Excel. Copy and Paste solutions and work into a Word document
with problems and solutions clearly identified.
Assignment is due on Wednesday (1/27) in class.
Problem 1
 Excel Plotting and Curve Fitting
In a new Excel Workbook, add the data set in Table 1.

Part (a)
Create an XY scatter plot of the data in the same Worksheet, be sure to
format the Figure
.
Add
a
Linear Regression
and show the equation and R
2
on the chart.
Part (b)
Create another figure, but on this one add a
Power
regression, again be sure to put the equation
and R
2
on the chart.
Part (c)
Create a third figure, but on this one add a
Cubic (
3
rd
order polynomial) regression, again be sure
to put the equation and R
2
on the chart.
Part (d)
Create a fourth figure, but on this one add a
4
th
order polynomial
regression, again be sure to put
the equation and R
2
on the chart.
Part (e)
Use the equations for the 4 regressions that you performed to predict the yvalue for x = 25, 70,
100, and 150
Questions:
Copy all of your plots into a single word file.
In that same word file answer the following
questions.
1)
What is R
2
a measure of? Does a higher R
2
mean that a given regression is the “right” one?
