CEE 320 Quiz #1 Environmental Engineering F 29 January, 2010 PLEASE WRITE YOUR NAME ON THE BACK Quiz #1 Potentially useful information 1000 L = 1 m 3 1 μ g = 10 -6 g A WATER RESOURCES PROBLEM Ecocity has two potential sources of water supply: groundwater and a small river fed by a mountain spring. The river supports a lot of fish and other wildlife and so the citizens do not want to use any more of it than necessary. However, unfortunately, their groundwater has barium concentrations in excess of the public health standards. Rather than invest money in a treatment plant to reduce the barium concentration of the groundwater to an acceptable level, the citizens decide to blend groundwater with the river water so that the standard is met. Determine the relative amounts of river water and groundwater that should be used, in m 3 per day. Data: Standard for barium in drinking water: 1 mg/L (maximum allowed) Barium concentration in river water: 0.5 mg/L Barium concentration in groundwater: 10 mg/L

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
