Melissa Storms English 101 – Storms May 3, 2010 Griffin Thread Paper: Leo and Empathy Susan Griffin’s essay “Our Secret” is a complex text, one that weaves together myriad  threads, or themes, into a stunningly complex tapestry of meaning. In order to unravel this text,  it is helpful to “pull” at individual threads, one of the more interesting of these being the story of  Leo, a man whose life was shaped by violence from the moment he was born. His father was a  brutal, intolerant man, and his half-brother was a sociopath who worked as a torturer for the  NKVD (forerunner of the KGB), and bragged to young Leo about having “made blood flow from  the nipples of [a tortured woman].” These early experiences with violence, and its associations with “power,” shape Leo in  profound ways, and are reinforced by experiences outside of his immediate family. At nine years  of age, Leo witnesses the violent flogging and execution of a partisan by the Germans; he finds  the violence, with which he is already intimately familiar, “exciting.” Later, when Leo is
